Cut A Rose From My Heart
Nothing I do is good enough for you,
Nothing I say could make this longing go away.
When I find myself sitting alone,
Whatever I do, I must finally pull through,
Or my heart will break every day.
I must stop myself from feeling this way,
Though my heart tells me otherwise.
I find myself thinking of you,
And I wish you'd think of me too.
I need to prune my heart,
And snip this rose and dry it.
For the once lively thing is dead,
And I wish to preserve its beauty.
Suppose I said,
"I've found the greatest beauty in the world,"
how would you respond?
Suppose I asked,
"Do you love me?"
What do you think you would answer?
Lost without time, without reference,
I lie here wondering alone,

It began and ended with a word.
Not a particularly strong or powerful word, but a word that changed everything. It wasn't too long or difficult to spell. It wasn't uncommon either. In fact, it was a perfectly ordinary word, but, I suppose, its commonplace origin is what made it so special.
I loved that word.
But the word doesn't mean much without the story along with it and I was always one for telling good stories.
I ignored the call from the other room and remained seated. That tone wasn't unfamiliar. Taking a bite from my toast, I waited for him to call again. It wouldn't be more than ten—
